Mazda Motor Corporation is placing much of its global financial recovery on the new Mazda CX-5, an SUV the Japanese automaker considers essential to reignite sales, strengthen its international presence, and restore profitability after one of the most challenging fiscal years in its recent history.

The company introduced the redesigned CX-5 as the centerpiece of its strategy for fiscal year 2027, during which it expects global sales to grow by 8.3 percent and operating profit to increase by 190.8 percent.

Mazda is currently facing the effects of U.S. tariffs, rising raw material costs, a slowdown in the Chinese market, and geopolitical tensions that caused operating profit to fall 72.3 percent during FY2026.

Against this backdrop, the new CX-5 has become the automaker’s primary bet to reverse financial pressure and regain global sales volume.

The new Mazda CX-5 will be key to the brand’s global growth

Mazda confirmed that the new CX-5 has already gone on sale in Europe and the United States, while Japan, Australia, and other international markets will gradually follow during the current fiscal year.

The company said the launch is progressing as planned and highlighted the positive initial response from customers.

According to Mazda, the SUV has received recognition for:

its evolved design, increased cargo capacity, improved interior comfort, new center display, and enhanced voice commands and steering wheel controls.

Mazda revealed that approximately half of the projected increase of 100,000 additional units for FY2027 will depend directly on the commercial performance of the new CX-5.

The automaker also reported that orders in Europe have already surpassed 10,000 units, exceeding internal expectations.

Mazda aims to restore profitability after its 2026 financial downturn

The commercial rollout of the new CX-5 comes after Mazda posted a sharp financial decline during fiscal year 2026.

Consolidated operating profit fell from 186.1 billion yen to 51.6 billion yen, while net profit declined by 69.2 percent.

The company explained that U.S. tariffs dealt the biggest blow to its financial results, reducing annual operating profit by approximately 154.9 billion yen.

Mazda also faced:

higher logistics costs, rising raw material prices, exchange rate volatility, and a broader slowdown across the global automotive industry.

In response, the company hopes the CX-5 will help restore sales volume, profit margins, and operational stability.

The CX-5 accounts for one-quarter of Mazda’s global sales

Mazda emphasized the historical importance of the CX-5 within its global product portfolio.

Since its original launch in 2012, the SUV has sold five million units worldwide and currently represents nearly one-quarter of the brand’s global sales.

The company considers the model essential to maintaining its presence in key markets such as:

the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

The Japanese automaker said the new CX-5 will play a decisive role in consolidating its growth strategy focused on higher-value products with stronger profitability.

Mazda expects higher sales in Europe and North America thanks to the CX-5

The automaker projects strong regional growth driven by the new SUV.

Mazda expects Europe to be its fastest-growing region during FY2027, with sales increasing by 20.5 percent to reach 197,000 units.

In North America, the company forecasts sales growth of 8.1 percent, while U.S. sales are expected to increase by 10 percent.

Mazda explained that this growth will be supported not only by the CX-5, but also by:

improved availability of the Mazda3 and CX-50, as well as the expansion of electric vehicle offerings in Europe and other markets.

Mazda combines the CX-5 with its global electrification strategy

While the new CX-5 will lead the company’s financial recovery, Mazda is also strengthening its global electrification strategy.

The company reiterated that it will maintain a “multi-solution” approach by combining:

battery electric vehicles, hybrids, and internal combustion engine models depending on the needs of each region.

Mazda believes that not all markets are advancing toward electrification at the same pace and argues that offering multiple technologies is the “most rational and practical” way to address the future of the automotive industry.

At the same time, the automaker will continue launching new electric vehicles developed jointly with Changan Automobile in China and Europe, including the Mazda6e and CX-6e.

Mazda forecasts nearly 200% growth in operating profit

Despite ongoing global uncertainty, Mazda expects a strong financial recovery during FY2027.

The company projects revenue of 5.5 trillion yen and operating profit of 150 billion yen, representing a 190.8 percent increase compared with the previous fiscal year.

It also expects global sales to reach 1.324 million units, driven primarily by:

the worldwide launch of the new CX-5, the expansion of its electric vehicle lineup, and structural cost-reduction programs.

Mazda acknowledged, however, that risks related to:

tariffs, inflation, exchange rate volatility, raw material costs, and geopolitical tensions will continue.

Even so, the automaker said the new CX-5 will be a fundamental pillar in building a “more resilient structure capable of generating stable profits” during the automotive industry’s new phase of global transformation.
