Younger generations remember advertising differently. Statista Consumer Insights reports reveal a significant shift in how advertising impacts Generation Z and Millennials. While younger consumers are more exposed to digital platforms and video games, Millennials maintain a more balanced relationship between digital and traditional media, directly influencing ad recall and the effectiveness of marketing strategies.

Who remembers ads the most? Advertising works differently for Millennials and Generation Z

Brands face a growing challenge: it is no longer enough to create an attractive campaign. Companies must also understand how each generation consumes media and which channels truly capture their attention. A Statista Consumer Insights study conducted in Mexico reveals that Millennials recall advertising more frequently than Generation Z, across both digital and traditional formats.

The analysis shows that these differences are driven not only by age but also by content consumption habits, social media usage, and preferences for specific platforms—factors that require companies to better segment their communication strategies.

Which generation remembers digital advertising the most?

One of the report’s most significant findings is that Millennials show higher levels of advertising recall across most digital channels.

On video platforms, such as YouTube and other audiovisual services, 54% of Millennials recalled seeing advertising during the past four weeks, compared with 47% of Generation Z.

The gap is also evident across other formats:

  • Social media advertising: 47% of Millennials versus 42% of Gen Z.
  • Streaming video service advertising: 43% versus 39%.
  • Search engine advertising: 26% compared with just 19% among Gen Z.
  • In-game advertising: the gap virtually disappears, with 32% of Millennials and 33% of Gen Z recalling ads.

These findings suggest that Generation Z pays relatively less attention to traditional digital advertising formats, while video games have become a space where both generations experience similar levels of advertising exposure.

Traditional advertising continues to have a greater impact on Millennials

The differences become even more pronounced when offline media are analyzed. Millennials remember more advertisements across virtually every traditional format, including television, radio, movie theaters, print media, and out-of-home advertising.

Key findings include:

  • Television advertising: 56% of Millennials versus 26% of Gen Z.
  • Radio advertising: 26% versus 23%.
  • Advertising seen directly in stores: 39% versus 32%.
  • Outdoor advertising: 40% versus 28%.
  • Movie theater advertising: 29% versus 21%.
  • Print newspaper advertising: 21% versus 17%.
  • Print magazine advertising: 20% versus 16%.

The lower recall of these formats among Generation Z aligns with their lower consumption of traditional media, particularly radio, television, and print publications.

Media consumption explains the differences

Media consumption habits help explain why advertising resonates differently with each generation.

Millennials consume more audiovisual content and traditional media:

  • 80% watch television.
  • 80% consume digital video.
  • 66% listen to digital music.
  • 52% listen to podcasts.
  • 48% listen to radio.

In contrast, Generation Z reports lower usage levels:

  • 75% watch television.
  • 71% consume digital video.
  • 63% listen to digital music.
  • 44% listen to podcasts.
  • Only 30% listen to radio.

Lower consumption of certain media naturally reduces advertising exposure opportunities among younger consumers.

Gen Z responds better to influencers and video games

Although they remember less conventional advertising, Generation Z is more strongly influenced by content creators.

The study found that 39% of Generation Z respondents said they purchased a product because it was promoted by an influencer or celebrity, compared with 34% of Millennials.

In addition, gaming plays a much more important role for younger audiences. Forty-four percent of Generation Z considers video games one of their main hobbies, compared with 42% of Millennials, while ad recall within video games is virtually identical between the two groups.

These findings indicate that campaigns built around streamers, digital creators, esports, and platforms such as Twitch can establish a stronger connection with younger consumers than traditional advertising.

Social media: platforms are changing too

Differences also emerge in the social media platforms preferred by each generation.

Among Generation Z:

  • Facebook: 87%.
  • Instagram: 74%.
  • TikTok: 72%.
  • YouTube: 66%.
  • Twitch: 10%.

Meanwhile, Millennials show stronger adoption of:

  • Facebook: 94%.
  • YouTube: 77%.
  • Instagram: 71%.
  • TikTok: 68%.
  • LinkedIn: 17%.

This means that a communication strategy focused solely on Facebook or YouTube can still be highly effective for Millennials, while capturing the attention of Generation Z requires a stronger presence on TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, and other digital entertainment platforms.

Advertising no longer works the same way for every generation

Statista’s data show that age has become one of the key factors in determining campaign effectiveness. Millennials demonstrate higher advertising recall across virtually every media channel, both digital and traditional, while Generation Z is more selective, consumes fewer conventional media outlets, and responds better to strategies built around influencers, video games, and next-generation social platforms.
